In the article, “Hotel New World Collapse,” Kayat (2012) has asserted that the catastrophe had serve as a warning to “the country and its building industry.” Neale (2001) stated that the building collapsed in a split second; emergency response units were sent in immediately. “How to avoid another Hotel New World disaster,” The Straits Times (1987) wrote that Wee Kim Wee, the forth President of Singapore, demanded a detailed investigation of the collapse. According to “Chronology of events,” The Straits Times (1987), internal explosion, defective building materials, poor soil foundation and additional live load were not the causes to the failure after examination. It also stressed that the failure was due to inferior structure design and insufficient maintenance. Neale (2001) stated that after the collapse, “the Building Control Act of 1989” and “the Building Control (Accredited Checkers) Regulations 1989” was introduced.
