In the article, “Hotel New World Collapse,” Kayat (2012) unfolded the theories and reasoning of this collapse. The author discusses about the history, chronology of events and various theories. According to “Chronology of events,” (1987, as cited in Kayat, 2012), Kayat mentioned that various theories like internal explosions resulted by gas leakage or terrorism, defective building materials, poor soil foundation and additional live load were made. However, they were not the causes to the failure after further examination. Kayat also stressed that the failure was progressive and was due to initial inferior structure design and insufficient maintenance. As this was further mentioned by Neale (2001, as cited in Kayat, 2012), the building self-weight was overlooked in the calculations done by the engineers and draughtsman. Neale (2001, as cited in Kayat, 2012) also stated that the calculations should be checked by a different professional engineer before submission. The article addres

Analytical Reflection

As the effective communication module comes to an end, teams selected by peers and teachers presented in the Showcase. This was a platform to showcase the months of work and progress that we have learnt throughout the course. Despite having a panel of judges that are in the work industry, most of us were calm and collected and performed flawlessly in presenting as well as pitching the idea forward. As a team, we worked on our pitch and pacing together to ensure delivery was proper. We listened and gave comments to improve ourselves. On the presentation day, the whole team was elated at the delivery of the speech and received great comments from judges. A great delivery of speech ensured good and continuous flow of each team member. One of my strengths was starting off the presentation at a good pace. I brought myself forward and showed confidence and this helped me gain the attention of the crowd. I felt that I made sure that my words were articulated fluently and brought the

Critical Reflection

Throughout this course, I personally feel that I have achieved the goals that I have set for myself from the start of this course. Although I was good in delivering messages and ideas through the group, I had anxiety when presenting in front of a crowd. However, through the practice of public speaking and practicing elevator pitches, it helped me gain confidence in public speaking. Learning from the exercises in class, I was able to reflect on my mistakes and make constant improvements in presenting. In terms of report writing, there are aspects that needs improvement.   Realising that I was not a grammar nerd, I was constantly making little mistakes in my report writing. However, through the course, I was learning along the way with proper use of language and sentence structure. This would be one area that takes time and practice and I am contented that this module accelerated my learning process. Our project group faced challenges in deciding on the direction of the report.

Personal Statement Draft #1

Glen a student from Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), currently pursuing his degree in Civil Engineering. Understanding the conserving Singapore’s ever-depleting landfill is a context that needs scrutiny, Glen finds it of utmost importance to tackle every aspect of food waste production as it is an ever-growing problem. Hence, together with his team members, they hope that through the implementation of a improved waste recycling system would encourage more interested parties to look at alternatives to help conserve the environment.

Executive summary Draft #1

This report was written in response to call for engineering problem-solution proposals. It focuses on the waste recycling technologies that are currently out in the market to combat the generation of food waste and discusses its capabilities against one another. The complication would be the difficulty to handle a overproduction of by-products and the productive use of them. This may result in squandering of by-products which reduces the tendency to use these machines which defeats the purpose of improving the recyclability of food waste. The objective of this report is to propose to the planning committee of SIT Punggol a more sophisticated system that improves and combines the technologies that are offered in the market currently. The team proposes a solution that allows the waste recycling machine to effectively produce the amount of by-products based on the input of the user. This will effectively provide the sufficient volume of fertilisers and reusable water so as to reduce th

1.            INTRODUCTION This proposal has been developed in response to combat the food waste by food consumers so as to convert the disposal into byproducts that benefits the environment. Singapore is faced with an ongoing situation where vasts amounts of energy and manpower has been used to deal with food waste. Starting from vehicles needed to transport to incineration plants, to the energy used in the boilers to incinerate food waste down to ten percent of its original size. Furthermore, the incineration of food waste comes with the imminent cause of air pollution which negatively degrades the environment. As Singapore’s population continues to grow, the amount of food disposal has been ever increasing at the incineration site. To counter the issue on the rapid growth in food disposal, my team proposed an idea to improve the situation of food disposal conservation. Since the recycling rate has increased gradually to 14% during the last ten years. Our goal is to im
