Reader's Response Final Draft

In the article, “Hotel New World Collapse,” Kayat (2012) unfolded the theories and reasoning of this collapse. The author discusses about the history, chronology of events and various theories. According to “Chronology of events,” (1987, as cited in Kayat, 2012), Kayat mentioned that various theories like internal explosions resulted by gas leakage or terrorism, defective building materials, poor soil foundation and additional live load were made. However, they were not the causes to the failure after further examination. Kayat also stressed that the failure was progressive and was due to initial inferior structure design and insufficient maintenance. As this was further mentioned by Neale (2001, as cited in Kayat, 2012), the building self-weight was overlooked in the calculations done by the engineers and draughtsman. Neale (2001, as cited in Kayat, 2012) also stated that the calculations should be checked by a different professional engineer before submission. The article addres

Analytical Reflection

As the effective communication module comes to an end, teams selected by peers and teachers presented in the Showcase. This was a platform to showcase the months of work and progress that we have learnt throughout the course. Despite having a panel of judges that are in the work industry, most of us were calm and collected and performed flawlessly in presenting as well as pitching the idea forward. As a team, we worked on our pitch and pacing together to ensure delivery was proper. We listened and gave comments to improve ourselves. On the presentation day, the whole team was elated at the delivery of the speech and received great comments from judges. A great delivery of speech ensured good and continuous flow of each team member. One of my strengths was starting off the presentation at a good pace. Critical Reflection

Throughout this course, I personally feel that I have achieved the goals that I have set for myself from the start of this course. Although I was good in delivering messages and ideas through the group, I had anxiety when presenting in front of a crowd. However, through the practice of public speaking and practicing elevator pitches, it helped me gain confidence in public speaking. Learning from the exercises in class, I was able to reflect on my mistakes and make constant improvements in presenting. In terms of report writing, there are aspects that needs improvement.   Realising that I was not a grammar nerd, I was constantly making little mistakes in my report writing. However, through the course, I was learning along the way with proper use of language and sentence structure. This would be one area that takes time and practice and I am contented that this module accelerated my learning process. Our project group faced challenges in deciding on the direction of the report.
